If my 35mm L auto focuses in manual mode, is my auto/manual switch broken?

Not necessarily. Mine does the same thing from time to time. However it usually stops auto focusing in manual after one or two times. The question is "does it auto focus all the time in auto mode?". If so, then you're fine.

wtf really? Never had this issue.

On my 85L, I have to depress the shutter 1/2 way to MF. So maybe you depress the shutter to focus, it actually knocks it out of focus so you can MF?
