    Hey guys,
A few months ago the Air Conditioning in my 2000 Jetta died, it was kinda gradual over a 3 hour trip we could feel it getting weaker. So I presumed the ref. had leaked out and so i turned it off to stop the compressor from dying. Well the next day I tried it once or twice and could feel the compressor engaging but then it stopped engaging.
I took it to a shop for diagnostics and they said it was out of freon.

So I'm stuck. It'll probably cost me close to a grand to get the whole thing working because i *think* i need a new compressor and to find the leak and fix that and drain/refill freon.

I am mechanically inclined and do every other kind of service myself - I just dont know how to handle freon well or overhauling an ac system. Do I just need to replace the compressor or could other things be bad? (ex evaporator condensor etc etc).

Any help would be appreciated... Including any guidance to sites with information on doing this work yourself.
