In the near future, the civilization of mankind has stepped aside for that of the beasts. As a result, the world is a wasteland filled with uncontrollable crime and terror. In the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, the Police Company, a band of non-human bounty hunters, keeps track of the city's most wanted. Among their ranks is Natsuki Sasahara, a cat-girl with a sharp sword and a craving for milk. She's partnered with Sakura Bokuseiinmonzeninari, a fox-woman who actually wants to kill Natsuki to fulfill her lifelong goal of being a nine-tailed fox.

    Story: C
Hyper Police is a bit funny and all, but it borrows too much from other police anime like You're Under Arrest. Character emphasis, as well as plot development, needs a lot of improvement. I almost fell asleep halfway through the first disc.

    Animation: C-
Keiji Gotoh's (Gate Keepers, Kiddy Grade) character designs are wasted by low-quality art and choppy animation that make the A.D. Police TV series look like Metropolis.

    Soundtrack: C+
Kenji Kawai (Mobile Police Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell) is a great musician, but unfortunately, there's nothing in this anime worth listening to.

    Sub vs. Dub
Hyper Police features Yuko Miyamura (Asuka in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Aisha Clan-Clan in Outlaw Star) as Natsuki, Chiyako Shibahara (Iraga in Outlaw Star) as Sakura, Akio Ohtsuka (Gato in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083, Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 1-2) as Batenen, and Ryuzo Ishino (Wu-Fei in Gundam Wing) as Tommy.

As for the English dub (presumably by Bang Zoom! Entertainment), don't bother. Dorothy Melendrez (Naru in Love Hina, Meryl in Trigun) is a talented voice actress, but she alone can't save Hyper Police's disastrous dub.

    DVD Extras: F
Come on - Image Entertainment isn't a real anime distributor.

    The Bottom Line
Strictly rental material, Hyper Police isn't worth that extra space on your DVD shelf.
