In the year 1600, during the battle of Sekigahara, warriors Kyoshiro Mibu and "Demon Eyes" Kyo - the legendary slayer of a thousand men - engaged in fierce combat. Both men disappeared when a meteor crashed in the battlegrounds.

Four years later, Kyoshiro is spotted on a rural highway, acting as a traveling medicine salesman. He is captured by the female bounty hunter Yuya Shiina when she discovers that deep inside him is the dormant personality of "Demon Eyes" Kyo himself.

    Story: B+
The action is a bit slow-paced, but the series has a lot of humor to it. It's like watching Rurouni Kenshin mixed with Trigun.

    Animation: A
Wow, has TV-grade animation evolved over the past few years. Samurai Deeper Kyo has an excellent blend of digital 2D and 3D animation. Just watch the scenes when Kyo lights up his sword.

    Soundtrack: A-
The TV series uses an interesting mix of orchestral, rock and metal music in its BGM. The opening theme, "Ao no Requiem" by Pipeline Project, is outstanding.

Samurai Deeper Kyo features Katsuki Konishi as Kyoshiro/"Demon Eyes" Kyo, Yui Horie (Naru in Love Hina, Galatea in Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040) as Yuya, Megumi Ogata (Shinji in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kurama in Yu-Yu Hakusho) as Yukimura and Kousuke, Akira Ishida (Athrun in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Xelloss in The Slayers) as Sasuke, Toshihiko Seki (Duo in Gundam Wing, Legato in Trigun) as Benitora, Takashi Matsuyama (Goto in Hunter X Hunter, Hayama in Kodomo no Omocha) as Saizou, Yukana Nogami (Kotoko in Chobits, Meiling Li in Card Captor Sakura) as Sakuya, Yumi Kakazu (Dita in Vandread, Asahina in RahXephon) as Izumo no Okumi, Takehito Koyasu (Zechs in Gundam Wing, Gamlin in Macross 7) as Hanzou Hattori, Nana Mizuki as Mika, Koji Ishii (Kimura-sensei in Azumanga Daioh, Hamdo in Now and Then, Here and There) as Mika's father, Hajime Iijima as Genma, Koji Iida as Kurosasori, Kouki Miyata (Souichi in RahXephon, Daisaku in Real Bout High School) as Shirogarasu, Michiko Takahashi as Mahiro, Madoka Akita (Kikuko in Love Hina) as Mayumi, Soichiro Hoshi (Kazuma in Scryed, Ryu Soma in Argento Soma) as Akira, Hikaru Midorikawa (Heero in Gundam Wing, Zelgadiss in The Slayers) as Migeira, Shinpachi Tsuji (Musashi in Getter Robo Armageddon, Baaranshya in Berserk) as Tokugawa Ieyasu, Sho Hayami (Max in SDF Macross and Macross 7, Wolfwood in Trigun) as Nobunaga, Isshin Chiba (Ryuji in Great Teacher Onizuka) as Noboyuki, Sakiko Tamagawa (Natsumi in You're Under Arrest, Tachikoma in Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex) as Shatora, Miki Choi as Santera, and Sakura Nogawa (Kaorin in Azumanga Daioh, Miyuki in Real Bout High School) as Saishi.

    The Bottom Line
Samurai Deeper Kyo, is not as good as the original manga, but still worth a look. I can't wait for a domestic release.
