I agree but from what I’ve read at that point it’s not about using it. It’s about an investment. Almost like buying a painting or something. Those very low runs by highly regarded people are sought after in that community. And that community is full of people with tons of disposable income. I do think it’s fucking insane and would never buy anything like that.
I'd hardly consider most of these super high end keyboards anything remotely close to art, which is how they're being priced. It takes very little actual skill to CAD something like a mechanical keyboard and have it CNC'd at a shop for $300, have it anodized, and shove a PCB and everything else into it. $1000 maybe, but just because someone does a fun color scheme and decides to make 30 of them doesn't mean people should clamor for them and pay 5x what they're actually worth when being generous.

People can obviously do what they want with their money, but for this particular hobby I think spending a lot is rather dumb.

This fuckin thread is gonna make me want to build a $2000 keyboard
If you don't go crazy on the components you can build nice ones for around $300, when it gets expensive is when you start going for high dollar keycaps and cases.

Check out kbdfans, they have some kits etc... you can build your own from.

I just looked at pics

Why the fuck is that thing $8000
While I don't agree with it and honestly don't really know except from what I've read on Reddit and various Discord servers is usually "very low production runs, high quality materials, very high QC" = higher costs. I think paying $8k for a keyboard is nuts but like any hobby you'll always have people just playing at a different level then everyone else.

each keyboard probably comes with a 1/1 NFT so you can use it in second lifemetaverse sim city 4000 and annoy your virtual neighbors

This.

Get a tofu65, some nice switches, some good stablizers, a decent set of keycaps and you're good.

I fell down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole for about a week a while back. In the end, I couldn't justify it. Seemed like a lot of cheap to manufacture components being sold at a gigantic premium because of limited run manufacturing. Kind of like the sneaker scene, but worse.

I have no problem spending money on things, but I couldn't justify spending hundreds on what seemed like cheap plastic/metal parts. Perhaps the value comes after assembling and using it. :dunno:

I still ended up spending a couple hundred on a G915, but I eventually needed a wireless keyboard anyway and it probably cost less than half of what my custom would. :o

Lol i used to have one of those style keyboards, supposed to be good for carpal tunnel or some shit

Was annoying for gaming though

Annoying for gaming?? They are annoying period.

And nearly everyone that I know that has a mechanical keyboard slams their fucking keys which makes it 10x worse.

All mine are 60% since I don't use the arrow keys or PGUP/DN etc... enough to need them on layer 1. If I need them though it's just a modifier away. Arrow keys are 2nd layer wasd, and delete is the backspace, ~ is ESC.

I'm pretty positive I could spit out a nicer keyboard than any of those and sell it for less than $2500. Likely with better quality materials, nicer cosmetic finishes, and even higher QC.

Unfortunately I don't want to be in the business of making keyboards

Oh absolutely, most of group buys really are in the $300 range. $2500 is way above normal.

I have a corsair k70 rgb mk.2 with speed switches. It took me a bit to go from MX Reds to MX Speed Switches but after I got used to them I love them.

I would love to buy a new full size keyboard but I have no idea what kind of switches I would want. I tried a brown set and the feedback seemed vague. I like the idea of a quiet(ish) but has a tactile click? Any suggestions?
