I was on the board of our chapter in school
The chapter here in my State isn't very big, so I couldn't really take advantage of it very much. I think in a typical year I may have attended maybe 1 luncheon and 1 training within it...not a whole lot.
Often AIGA would host convention and training opportunities that are pretty good...but it would have been cost prohibitive for me to get there.
The materials they send are sometimes pretty good. I used to like the annual reports they send out that gives you results on designer saleries across the country. They also had this volume of materials for design and ethical standards I still pull out every once in a while as a reminder. But I think you could get this kind of information in any bookstore if you look for it.
There is a small value from being able to slap a "member of AIGA" in your marketing. But my opinion is that's probably more important to people in your field then it is to the average person who has no idea what this organization is.
I think if you're prepared to put a lot of time into it, there could be a lot of reward from it, just like any other opportunity to network. If you're in a city that has a lot of AIGA things going on, it should be a good deal.
