any one in here running a hosting company?
experiences, input, etc...
yeah, what do you want to know, it can be a pain in the ass.
few people do.
I do for clients, but not publicly available.
this is what i am doing right now as well and im wondering why i can't do this for other people in my business networks who already have sites so i can build another source of monthly income
do you think its possible to do this with a dedicated server or would you need to have your own?
id like to start with a vps and scale it up to a dedicated as i need more space and server resources...
i have a few business clients that don't mind paying $15-20 a month and im figuring i can make a few bucks
definately possible with a dedicated, ensure you have good clients and not file sharing porn shit and you will be ok.
any recommended scripts or apps for use in development.
obv, i am going to want to have a support ticket system and an automated billing system to make it as self automated as possible.
Do you have cPanel or Plesk on your dedicated server now? If so you can get APIs to integrate all that shit right off the bat.
It can be an easy way for a developer to make a little extra residual income from existing clients depending on the type of client they are. The types with a simple little low traffic site are great and cost you virtually nothing in resources or anything.
I'd imagine the ones like me who don't think twice about abusing the shit out of any server that's not my own are terrible. My dreamhost acct is so packed full of shit. There's probably 300 databases and along w/ copies of one click installs for every one, and god knows how many subdomains. Like if I need to do a little wordpress script or mod, I got tons of WP installs already but can't remember what's stock, modded or just completely hacked to hell. Fuck it...fresh copy one click. I also went through a stage back in the OTAH days were I found it amusing to upload 2 or 3 800MB pronos and see how much bandwidth I could burn a through in a month. My record was like 300 gigs (my account there has 8000GB/month limit )
Surprised they didn't shut you down before you used that much.
Got 2 Win2k3, 4 RHEL 4,5.
I know a majority of the owners of all the websites on my servers personally/developed the sites myself.
A few domains that came from word-of-mouth where I was just needed to house sites/development points.
If you've been using dedi's on your own for a while the transition will be very easy. At this point I can't recomment WHM/cPanel, it's a breeze with the software if you have a limited knowledge of the *nix environment for webservers.
No billing software or ticketing systems for me, problems/questions are directed to me either via phone or email. And billing is done via paypal payment request every month or a check by mail if I'm already being paid by the client of other work.
It's nice to do because as a developer/designer your clients will spread your name around by word-of-mouth.
Plesk right now. What API's?
