i was wondering, whats the main difference between apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
thx for the link, so from what i understand upgrade actually upgrades the latest version of programs/packages
but still confused about update? does it update the sources from which the packages retrieved or what
I always thought update and upgrade were basically the same... Anyway, I stopped using apt-get when Fedora came out. I use yum now, which is basically the same idea.
update tells apt-get to update its databases. It downloads the newest package lists, etc.
upgrade tells apt-get to upgrade installed packages to the newest versions.
don't forget: apt-get dist-upgrade
