Late 70's, early 80's?
What should I look for when buying?
things in general made in the 80's are bad
vaccum system, brakes, suspension (most importantly front end like ball joints, tie rods, etc) frame rot in front of the rear tires (under passenger compartment) and lastly, the birdcage (windshield frame, t top frame) are prone to heavy rot.
if you're looking for a shark body style, avoid the 82s due to X fire injection. 78-79's are decent but the 80-81 look the nicest with a good potential for power and the key word there is potential. They're all dogs in those years.
if you need any more help, let me know, I know those cars like the back of my hand.
I've been attracted to the shark body style since I was a wee lad so power to the ground isn't the main concern.
How reliable are they, if taken care of properly of course?
While the late 70's and 82 vettes are not the best performance wise they are still fun to cruise around in. 84 is one of the best handing vettes ever made, but it's a little low on power but that can be changed quite easily. The L98 is an amazing engine but the plugs are a PITA but most V8's are. They handle really well but the early C4 dash isn't really my thing. the 90-96 C4 is a great car. Just depends on what you want.
if you properly maintain them, they should be just like a typical car. they CAN last if you're nice to them, I made the mistake of modding the shit out of mine to where the stock parts just wont hold up
Why? C3s and C4s look like they can hold their own.
