Plan is picked up a stripped lower, parts kit and complete upper. I've seen mixed thoughts on buying a cheap cheaper lower vs. name brand. I've read the del-ton parts kit seems to be best bang for the buck. I'm totally lost on uppers. I've been trying to research different types but haven't really had time do to finals. Came on here to try and get a crash course.

do what i do. im building a rifle slowly. right now its fishing season for me. i love fishing and buying gear i dont need . when im not fishing, ill look online for good deals on parts and order them when i find them. im in no hurry to build a rifle. originally i was going to build a budget rifle but im guessing by the time im done, the price of my rifle will be well over 1k. but i wont feel so bad because i wont be spending 1k all at one time

I woke up to 400 black listed IPs so I'm kinda busy today. This is more or less just random thoughts, I'll try to reformat it later


Decide if you want a fixed front sight or if you want a free float rail. Personally I like the fixed front sights, a free float rail build will cost $200-500 extra when it's all said and done. I also think that quad rails are a waste for most people

The main difference between the standard 16" AR barrel profiles is the weight. From lightest to heaviest: light weight, Gov't profile, M4 Profile. I like the light weight barrels.

Carbine and Mid Length is referring to the gas system, there's not a huge difference but Mid length will have longer handguards, a longer sight radius, slightly heavier and softer recoil compared to the carbine. I prefer mid's but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the carbine length gas system.

16" is the minimum legal barrel length, you can buy a 14.5" barrel and permanently attach (pin + silver solder) a 1.5" flash hider to make it 16". This can limit things later down the road - you will never be able to attach a different flash hider and most surpressors won't work with the 1.5" barrel extensions. It will also add to the cost and you'll only save maybe 1" so I would suggest sticking with the 16".

If you're buying a stripped lower, stick with a basic FORGED lower. I'd only suggest purchasing a billet lower if it comes matched with a billet upper.

You'll still need to get a handguard of some sort, obviously the Magpul MOE midlength in this case which can be found under $30. Theres also a magpul BUIS rear sight that folds down for ~$45 instead of the DD A1.5

I really like the DD lower parts kit ($65 through SG), so I'd actually buy that PSA build kit and also the DD LPK, using the psa lower parts kit as spares.

What should I be looking for in lowers other than forged? I've seen some on gunbroker for around $60, others around $120 and some around $200.

That's kind of hard to answer because there's so many different lowers, quality as well as brand names make a difference in the price. They should all be 7075 aluminum

I wouldn't spend $70 more on a Rock River Arms (RRA) lower personally, but I would spend $100 more for a BCM/Daniel Defense/Noveske/LMT just to say I had one

Here are some links to check out, BCM goes out of stock FAST. SmartGunner's pre-made uppers ship in just a few days but their custom builds can take anywhere from 1-3 months. Also note the price on the custom $655.00 SG uppers, those quad rails can cost anywhere from $280-400 on their own.

Red would be my first choice - the $655 SG upper is probably the best deal if you can deal with the wait

midlength...any truth to that?
