i'm trying to convert my entire dvd library over to xvid/ffmpeg format for playing on my HTPC + 40" samsung hdtv

i've had decent success in converting video_ts folders and burnt single layer dvds. i haven't tried dual layer dvds yet

i'm wondering what might be my best settings for my setup. i have had good results with converting at 1800kbps with mp3 audio and xvid or ffmpeg format. file sizes come out at around 1.4gb each

i'm wondering a few things, what does 2 pay encoding do? also, if i put a 5.1 channel card with optical out in my HTPC, how can i encode files an keep the dolby digital or DTS?

(yeah i know, it shouldn't be considered an HTPC if it currently outputs analog stereo)
