After years of owning several Point & Shoot's, I’m looking to take my photography hobby to the next level and purchase an SLR camera soon. I was wondering if you guys could help me select a good all-around DSLR camera for an SLR newbie like myself.
I was looking at the following entry-level models and comparing their features:

    - Canon 400D (XTi)
    - Canon 450D (XSi)
    - Nikon D40x
    - Nikon D60
    - Sony Alpha A100

So far I'm leaning towards the Canon 400D, but the Nikon D60 is in a close second. I'm also looking into the Nikon D50 (used) as well. At this point, I wouldn't mind buying used since this is my first venture into DSLR photography. I don’t want to spend more than $800. What do you guys think?

Also, what’s the deal with this Canon vs. Nikon war? lol

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

the XT, XTi, and XSi are all great and fairly cheap.

i would suggest you get a XT since its the cheapest and learn from there. It is more then capable of taking great pictures. And if you decide later what features you would like, you can get the appropriate camera.

More megapickels =/ better pictars. Go with the XT and invest money on other areas of gear. Bodies come and go.

rebel xt (body only) = $395
    35f/2 (lens) = $230
    430ex (exterrnal flash) = $240
    ----------------
    $865

ok $65 + shipping over your budget. but it'll be worth it.

you can even buy the flash later

Buy the 28 f/1.8 - even better :bigthumb: But more expensive. If you buy used, all three of these things can be had for much cheaper. I'd buy a used 550ex over a new 430ex.

I got a D40 for my first dslr. I kind of regret not getting a canon instead. I'm saving up for a D80 right now though.

I'm in the same predicament, I was thinking of buying the XSi in a few months until I saw this post, should I consider the XTi aswell?

DONT get the D40x or D60.

    No internal motor drive.

They should print this on the fucking box 'Warning, this camera has a poor selection of lenses that cost twice as much'.

    It's a good camera though.

I'd go with an XTi. I bought an XT a few years ago, and it was a great entry to dSLRs. Be prepared to spend more on other odds, and ends. Bag, Memory, a lense filter, etc, etc...............etc.

They do too. Just the d40, d40x and d60 have no internal AF motor.
