TECH Creating Iphone Apps

This maybe the wrong sub forum but it kinda fits I think (seems to be alot of programmers in here),

Is it possible to create a iphone/ipad app that controls the functions of the phone or controls another app? for instance say you wanted to control the sms functions of a phone is that possible - i.e message comes in - you do something with it as defined by a predetermined list. I guess it would be sort of like a mail filter for incoming mail. Or is this outside of the scope of the iphone application system?

Also is it possible to run two apps at the same time? ie one running in the background all the time.

Any help would be good

There is no public api for intercepting sms/email on the iphone/ipad. You can compose sms messages(as of the latest sdk) from an app, but that's about it.
