I've 100% ruined a race cause I had the lead for 15 seconds off the start. Just not worth it. I sort of set a rule, for every 10 miles of distance, I will do a 1/2 mile of hard push at the end (max effort) - so I try to mentally leave that in the energy bank to really push at the end.

I learned (the hard way) in the last running race I was in that the race is rarely won in the first mile. I just actually have to *practice* it. :hs:

I just have too much fun going fast.

I did a group ride outside a few weeks ago and I felt like I was going the speed of light.

Shopping for a new bike I’m grossed out by how expensive high end bikes are these days.

But I’m thinking like I’m 42 now. My riding time is limited by kids and it’s not like I have a million years of real fitness ahead of me. Maybe I should just get whatever bike I’m excited about and enjoy the riding time I have.

yea yea.

I keep reading shit about how your fitness necessarily declines in your 40s, and I’m probably in the best shape of my life right now, and i’m like - I fucking kill myself at work so i can ride 1-2 hours per day at 6AM for fitness and mental health, perhaps i can justify maximizing that fun.

The goal really is keeping the best shape you can as the decline sets in.

I sort of realized a while back how many things I was doing that were actively going to hurt me in the long term and sought out to replace those habits with better ones. I got trail running shoes from santa this year, and they've only been out once. All about finding that balance and sometimes taking the first steps its easy to put up bullshit blockers.

set a price limit, go peruse 99spokes.com and buy the best spec bike you can within the limit!

Also, it appears Lifetime bought-up some of the MTB races I've done throughout the years down in Central Texas. The Rattler was $50 every year I've done it, now it's $130 and sold out in like 10 minutes. Ugh. Cool to see Lifetime ruin gravel by treating it like triathlon and I hope people return to CX.

Lame. The sellout could also be just the massive influx of covid athletes

Aye, same. The big drop between 5 and 12 minute kinda emphasizes the whole "glass cannon" notion, however. :hs:

I mean, technically we all are, right? While it would be impressive to see someone with ~350w for every interval there you'd just ask them "so like, all flats and no sprinting ever?" I like a little spice in my life, so as long as this curve looks healthy (totes subjective) I wouldn't worry!

I was just wondering if there are still a lot more active riders than pre covid. I wouldn't know because I started in 2021
In my observations, it's about the same as pre-covid now. But then again, races/rides have always filled up quickly. Latoja and the Little Red specifically have had lotteries for years.

Also, if you compare the watts per kg at each interval it really shows that you are clearly lighter than I (182)

Your 30m of 4.35 w/kg aligns closest with my best 5m interval

So the work you can do for 30m, I can only sustain for 5m, I think I am comparing this right, but someone will correct me if I am fucking this up

I was looking at our local race calendar last night - there is a 12m TT in March this year, then a bunch more gravel before the timed road events, one at our raceway and one is a hill climb crit

I think that's about right? My weight ranges between 125 and 130 lbs (126lbs this morning), but I'm not sure about how to interpret the data either.
