Shift cable broke on gravel bike 20 miles from home. Just ground it out in the 11T.

I checked and it had barely over 3k miles. I usually swap that bike every ~2k and my road bike ~4K. The gravel bike frame has a weird exit for the housing and a tight turn results so shift quality usually goes down faster but it wasn’t this time so I didn’t replace it. Lesson learned :hs:

Get zip ties and mini vise grips in your gear bag. At least then you can cut/snag the shift cable, and zip tie the vise grips to your frame/gear so you can pick your gear to limp home in.

I didn’t realize til I got home that I could have tightened the limit screw to get a better gear

Need to just change it more often I guess. Dunno why it failed earlier than any road cable though.

Beetle- do dura ace for road pedals, xtr if you go mtb. For shoes, should you go spd pedals, the shimano rx8 is designed to be walked around in without clacking and are super stiff

Tire wise go corsa control tubeless. Pirelli is in the process of revamping their tire line. The tires made in Italy are good, the older compounds are too hard and don’t grip when wet

The best thing and worst thing about SPD pedals are there are one sided ones with flats on the opposite so you can wear normal shoes too! The worst part about them is its like plugging in a USB every time you clip in.

Just get a different bike if you want to ride with normal shoes

I took out the road bike for the first time since August yesterday, sons. I did this to attempt to get myself juiced to buy a road bike later this year or early next. It was, um, strange, and I wonder if I'm a "CX bike everywhere" type person.

What’s the scoop here? Corsa tires are usually meh
Corsa tires have probably been through at least 4 generations since ~2020, plus a 5th with the "Next" tires. They finally figured it out though and seem to mount well, not stretching to the point they won't seat on the rim. These are hand-made "open-tubulars" so don't expect the ease of ownership to be the same as a vulcanized tire kicked out of a factory at a share-holder driven pace. These Veloflex are easily my favorite tire but there are two big compromises which are they don't last as long as a vulcanized tire and they lose air when sitting up, and you want compressed air to mount them. However, the ride on 28s is truly magical on 28s at 70/75psi. I put about 5k miles on three Veloflex Corsa where I had one flat that required a plug and one tire casing failed after a couple thousand miles, probably from adventurous gravel.

I'll be running 32mm Veloflex on my 25mm IW gravel wheels at 35/40psi as my training tire that goes everywhere which is mainly country roads, gravel roads, and country road shoulder. I've been riding 32mm Panaracer slicks for which I was shipped the "plus" tires with a shitty breaker in them because, rather than the more supple version and I'm over it, for now.

I already want to sell my Tarmac after getting back into mtbing :o. I need to take it out again to be sure but riding on pavement doesn't sound fun. The opposite (mtb -> road) happened a year and a half ago but I'm way more into mtbing this time.

Wife wants a bike now to ride around the neighborhood so I might sell it and get a cheap hardtail to hook up the kid trailer to.

I bet you'd regret it.

I can probably get a a coupon for Charge bikes at $1100 for the "city" bike and like $1800 for the mid-drive MTB version.

Fatass here,

Killer cycling week (for me), got three 20 mile rides in, and a couple shorter rides. I would probably have more, but I've been doing a lot of hiking as well to mix things up.

Hard to believe that just back in November I did my first ride since completely falling off the wagon a number of years ago, and with that ride I only did a little over 4 miles, felt like absolute hell the entire time, it took over 25 minutes and my AVERAGE HR was 171! Insane! Can't believe how out of shape I was. I would come back coughing so bad that I felt like I was going to hack out a lung. Now I can do 20 miles at a decent pace and comfortably stay in zone 2 (doing a lot of longer Z2 work lately and mixing in some occasional Z4) and when I get back I already feel like riding again within an hour, hah .

I still have tons to lose, not sure my current weight (avoiding the scale helps me psychologically), but cycling is such a great way to get in shape! Can't get enough! Definitely losing lots of inches off my waist, I was 53.5 (YIKES) when I started and currently at 46.25 (measured around belly button and love handles). My goal is 38 (I have a large frame).
