im 50 miles into this week, and it just got warm and sunny out a bit ago. Might take a jaunt up a hill later.

Dude, that's awesome.

What keeps you motivated?

Thanks man, and thankfully it's the enjoyment I get out of it. I just love being out in the world, and now it's at the point where it almost feels like cheating when compared to going to the gym, hah. I can ride for an hour and a half (or more) outside no problem and enjoy every moment, but at the gym 20 minutes feels like an hour and I dread it!

I think you already follow me and I followed back, right?

I don't think so. It doesn't look like I can PM you on this site (I think it's a supporter only feature or something?), and I'm weird about posting stuff that is super identifiable online, so if you have a throwaway email address or something then I can shoot my account to you if you want it.

Getting a few outdoor rides this week really got me excited for better weather. I am pretty close to registering to do a local TT just to get a timed event under my belt in a way that won't break a collarbone or my bike :0

Fatass here,

Killer cycling week (for me), got three 20 mile rides in, and a couple shorter rides. I would probably have more, but I've been doing a lot of hiking as well to mix things up.

Hard to believe that just back in November I did my first ride since completely falling off the wagon a number of years ago, and with that ride I only did a little over 4 miles, felt like absolute hell the entire time, it took over 25 minutes and my AVERAGE HR was 171! Insane! Can't believe how out of shape I was. I would come back coughing so bad that I felt like I was going to hack out a lung. Now I can do 20 miles at a decent pace and comfortably stay in zone 2 (doing a lot of longer Z2 work lately and mixing in some occasional Z4) and when I get back I already feel like riding again within an hour, hah .

I still have tons to lose, not sure my current weight (avoiding the scale helps me psychologically), but cycling is such a great way to get in shape! Can't get enough! Definitely losing lots of inches off my waist, I was 53.5 (YIKES) when I started and currently at 46.25 (measured around belly button and love handles). My goal is 38 (I have a large frame).
Good job man, feels good to see progress and get healthier right?

Diet is a huge factor too. Gamechanger for me.

just learned the spokes on my bike can be ordered with PC coating. This sounds expensive.

Yeah I feel MUCH better than I did just three months ago for sure. Diet has been pretty solid. I don't do the cheat day thing, rather I do cheat meals, so maybe once every 10 days on average I'll do a cheat meal, but I still try to keep it reasonable with what I eat when I'm "cheating". Thankfully shit like soda has never been a thing for me, so I'm drinking almost nothing but filtered water and unsweetened ice tea.

I had my blood drawn back in October and the numbers were quite bad (very high cholesterol, pre-diabetic, just bad all around). I'm looking forward to doing a 6 month check in April to see how the numbers are looking, my blood pressure is down and my resting heart rate is way better (was in the 70s now in the mid-50s).

Also I'm feeling fully committed still. I think I've said it a few times here before, but before I became an alcoholic for 5 years and gained all this weight, I did an absolute shit-ton of cycling and I was worried I would never feel that good addiction again (hey better than alcohol at least!), but I feel like I'm back. Just gotta start pumping these numbers up more! I wanna hit a metric century in the next few weeks, and go from there.

Distance goals are super fun because you can map routes to make them fun and acheivable. For me, I eventually bored of them because of the time commits (3+ hour rides are a lot to ask of the wife to watch our spawn) and started trying for one hour rides but a good strong effort, mix in a hill climb or two, etc.

I do miss the long rides as they were super helpful for mind health. I tend to silently unpack a lot on those since I tend to ride solo, its just me alone with my thoughts. My more aggressive rides, I still have the aloneness, but I can't hear the stupid brain over my screaming legs and pounding heart.

New Fizik Arione Classic should be here tomorrow. I've been riding a Nashbar GR2 for years and really really like it, but the shell is cracking and sagging into the rails. Of course they are long discontinued. These were known as arione clones back in the day, we will soon see

In for sore asses!

On that note, I have now done 3 rides on the Specialized Power Mirror and I like it now (my ass adjusted to it ok) but last night I had a clip in fail and landed taint down on the nose and grrrrrink now it points down. Dammit. Need to loose, evaluate and retighten that before my next outing. But the good news is, I don't HATE the saddle as bad as I did day one.
