I'm contemplating building myself a server. When I get around to building it, it will have to stay on all the time in order to do its job, but I know perfectly well that I'm not going to use it for much, at least not at first. It would be more of a "buy it now, find uses for it later" kinda thing. (first comes the latest round of car repairs, and then maybe some furniture. But the server is on the list.) And yet, should I do this, I won't want to have it idling all the damn time. So my question is: where does one go to find legitimate causes that can benefit from a little additional distributed computing power, similar perhaps to what [email protected] was all about, but not so far-fetched? If I've got to pay the electric bill and the broadband bill for the thing (both of which would be roughly the same price regardless of usage) then I'd like to know (or at least imagine) that it's doing some good for the world.
