Every time when im burning a dvd r when it reaches 12x speed it fails  the disc is 16x compatible. I'm wondering do the discs suck or is it my DVD Writer?

Might be the discs, might be the drive.

What brand of discs are you using?

What software are you using to burn it? Also, are you copying a disc or creating a new one?

creating a new one and also i thought it was the software too. I tried roxio, nero and vista's own burning software they all started turning out coasters once it reached 12x speed

Have you tried setting the max burn speed to under 12x to see if it works then?

i hope your not burning a movie at that speed. i find that it doesn't matter what media i use or drive, if i burn over 4x - it might skip in a couple of my dvd players (i have 2 philips dvp642 and philips dvp5982)

if it's a movie, i always burn at 2x or 4x. i can wait the extra 10 mins or so it takes. i never have any skips at that speed

as for your problem, it's either the media or the drive. i would upgrade the firmware on the drive, i know that i didn't have the option to burn greater than 8x on my one drive until i upgraded the firmware, then i could burn at 16x. it also allowed me to use a verbatim media that it didn't like before the firmware upgrade
