One basic skill every man should know is how to tie a proper tie. The windsor is the basic essential knot and very easy to learn. The knot you see on tv (newscasters, tv shows, etc) is usually a half-windsor because of the fact that NO ONE IN HOLLYWOOD CAN TIE A FRIGGIN TIE. You'll notice that they're always crooked, sloppy and the dimple is either non-existant or off to the side. There are many pictorials on the internet, but I found the drawings to be lackluster and hard to follow. I tried to make a step by step tutorial with as much of a 1st person view as possible. Hope this helps. Step 1: Start with the fat part of the tie on your LEFT side (picture is taken in a mirror so image is inverted), about a foot longer than that of the skinny side Step 2: Cross the fat side to the right, over the skinny side Step 3: Now take the fat side and cross it back to your left underneath (like you're wrapping it around) Step 4: Insert fat end as shown and pull tight tighter all the way tight. You should now have a little "V" which will be the foundation of your knot Here comes the trickiest part. A lot happens in these next steps, so look ahead and see the sequence as a whole. Step 5a: Now hold the V between your index and thumb and bring the fat end over to the right... Step 5b: and UP through the neck hole... Step 5c: (At this point you'll notice that the tie is loosely wrapped around your index finger) then DOWN through this space that your index finger is making pull tight all the way tight...TAH DAH! Your knot should now be formed! To tighten, hold your newly found knot with one hand and pull the little end with the other This is how it should look when it's done. The finished tie should be the length shown in the picture - the end of the tie just touching the top of the belt buckle. Don't be frustrated if you don't get it perfectly the first time..it takes practice! Good Luck!
