used off BH for 475, not a bad deal. Motherfuckers on craigslist wouldn't go below $550, and I was having a hard time with forums because all the nikon forums have stupid rules about post counts and member status before you can actually attempt to buy anything.

so my next step will be glass. I am thinking the 18-200 and 50 1.4 or maybe the sigma 30 1.4, heard good things about it.

50 1.4 for sure!!! And there's nothing wrong with the D80, I like mine a lot. 18-200 is a great walk around lens, but try to buy used if you can. I think they're a little over priced new. What about a 85 1.8??? The sigma 30 is a bit too close in focal range to the 50 IMO.

Congrats :bigok:

50/1.4 is awesome! I love it

18-200 is decent, if you are making large prints I'd stay away from it, or if you are a pixel peeper like me ;)

I was looking at the sigma 30 1.4 as well, and also the nikon 35/2 - but they are so close to the 50 I can't justify it. I'd rather have an 85/1.8 for the money.

yeah i'd either get the 50 or the 30.
i've heard that the 18-200 isn't that sharp. And I don't really need that much reach. What would you guys reccomend for a standard walk around zoom. I have so much to learn about nikon lenses :wtc:

I was looking at the Sigma 24-70 2.8 or Tamron 28-75 2.8. I wanted to wait til the next gen of the Sigma came out but I heard that it's still in development and I dunno if I can wait it out any longer. I've only used it at the photo expo but I hear great things about the Tamron 17-50 2.8, so that would be another option for you as well.

I sold all my non fixed aperture lenses and have the 28-70 2.8 as my "basic" lens, which is probably a bit overkill and it looks freakishly large on the D80. 18-55 VR, 18-135, or even the new 24 (?)-105 VR would be decent choices. I liked my 18-135 kit lens on the D80, and I'm sure you can find it cheap since most people upgrade from it. I gave mine to a friend with a D50 for free. I've seen 'em go for $120-150 on NikonCafe. Great budget walk around lens.

be careful, that shit is LOUD when it focuses. I thought it was breaking when I first bought it. xenon supra thoguht the same thing apparently. :mamoru:

I hadn't used mine in a long time and I was all :eek4: So I took it apart and everything looked fine. I just figured it was dying...I guess it's good to know that everyone else's does it too.
