I bought Modern Warfare 2 for 360 and put it in... sometimes it will not even see it is a game, other times it will play it as a dvd, and occasionally it will recognize it and start the game. When it does start the game sometimes it will immediately say the disc is unreadable and other times it will work. Now I can put an audio cd or video dvd in it and it will work perfectly, so I do not think the drive is bad but wtf is going on? It only has a problem with game CDs, it does the same thing to Rainbow Six 2 as well.

It's possible it can't spin the disc fast enough to read it. Because cds and dvds spin much slower than the 12x a game disc spins at.

Have fun replacing your optical drive. Hopefully it's still under warranty.

Funny thing is that I just installed Modern Warfare 2 to the HDD and it did it fine, and now seems to be playing the game now that it does not really need the dvd drive as much.

I could just buy another optical drive and replace it, right? As long as I got the right model?

You need to extact the drive key so it matches the mobo aswell. Google it.

and by doing this you will be modding your console which is now detectable by MS and your console will be banned from live.

Probably better off replacing the 360.

Prolly. It is the older non-hdmi one that is loud as fuck and uses more power.

i don't think theres any way to swap drive keys with legit firmware so user-replaceable optical drives are a thing of the past for now (correct me if i'm wrong here)

I speak from experience...shit actually happened from playing MW1. It went out of warranty like a week beforehand, so it was 100 to fix through Microsoft. I said fuck it, bought an optical drive off of eBay, replaced it, and it fixed THAT problem for about 6 months before I got checkerboards all over my screen. Oh, and this is after I had already been RRoD'd.
