Hartford Homeowner Kills Burglary Suspect 12:06 PM EDT, June 8, 2007 By HILDA MUÑOZ, The Hartford Courant A Hartford man stabbed and killed one of two men he caught burglarizing his home on Park Terrace early this morning, police said. Police are not releasing the name of the homeowner to protect him from potential retaliation, Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts said today. Police are also withholding the name of the suspected burglar, who was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital. He was stabbed once in the chest, Roberts said. Whether the homeowner will be charged with a crime "remains to be seen," said Roberts. However, Roberts emphasized during a press conference this morning, that the homeowner protected himself when attacked by the burglar. "He was trying to get out [of the house], he wasn't looking for a confrontation," Roberts said. The other burglar, described as a man of about 30, got away. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division at 757-4000 or the confidential tip hotline at (860)527-TIPS (8477). The homeowner, a 30-year-old man, is in the process of renovating the three-family home on Park Terrace. He went to the house around 1 a.m. to sleep and saw two men at the back of the house, Roberts said. He ran to his bedroom, which is near the front entrance, and grabbed a knife, Roberts said. The homeowner then tried leaving the house, but one of the burglars approached him from behind, Roberts said. The homeowner stabbed the burglar once in the chest, Roberts said. The burglar walked about 120 feet from the house before collapsing, Roberts said. The homeowner is cooperating with police and is remorseful, Roberts said. Roberts said the homeowner is missing a samurai sword that was wrapped in a white sheet.
