Thinking about getting a .454 Raging Bull 5" revolver for my next gun.

I want something big enough I can carry it externally. And .454 would fuck someone day up.

I could carry .454 loads, and shoot .45LC and .45 ACP (with moon clips) at the range.

Anyone have one of these or any experience with one?

From the practical standpoint you'll find rounds better suited to self defense in the standard calibers. The gun also weighs a fuck ton. Don't buy it thinking you'll carry it or use it for defense, its a fun gun and nothing more.

only self defense if you're walking through bear/moose country.

There are plenty of people that carry .45LC for self defense,
and the .454 is just a bit larger than that.

The local gun shop to me has sold several S&W .500s to people purchasing
them to carry for self defense, and I have a friend that carries one sometimes.

I wouldn't carry it normally, I'd much rather carry my smaller, lighter and more concealable .380.

However I'm just wanting a larger pistol for range use, and if I feel like it, to carry it externally.

For example, next month I'm a range officer at a machine gun shoot. The owners have asked us to carry externally while there. I feel like a jackass carrying my Bersa in an external holster.

Why not go with something in between a Bersa and the Taurus? Seems like there are plenty of handguns that are great for self defense but not that large and bulky, but still substantially larger than a Bersa.

Link to federal/winchester/cci/remington .45 lc jhp loads suitable for self defense against people? A .45" wound that can be 8 people thick isn't nearly as good as a .85" wide 1 person deep wound.

People are dumb, don't strive to emulate them. People at gun stores buy lorcin's, glaser safety slugs, bird shot for home defense, flash lights and lasers made for airguns, holsters with unsafe retention devices, single action revolvers for self defense and countless other stupid things. Yes your friend probably counts unless he's worried about large bears.

I'd feel like alot more of a jackass carrying a .454 but I guess ymmv.

    And some +P Cor-Bon DPX's.

Theres plenty more selection too, those just happened to come from a quick browse on Cheaper than Dirt.

I'm going to ignore the comment you made about my friend, because its obvious you don't know what the fuck your talking about. 45 Colt is an excellent self defense round. .454 is just a more powerful version of it.

In my opinion, short of toting around a sawn off .300 Lapua rifle, there is no such thing as having too powerful of a self defense hand gun, as long as the user is comfortable with it, and knows how to manage it.

Now, if I couldn't handle the recoil from it, then yes, it would be a bad idea. But I've comfortably shot a .500 before, and from what I've read, .454 from a ported barrel is even more managable. The .500 S&W I handled felt very comfortable, and while not something I could carry IWB, it would be easy to carry in a cross draw chest rig while wearing a jacket, or carry externally if I was going somewhere without a lot of public.

The reason I would go with .454 over .45LC is the exact same reason I would by a .357 over a .38 Special. Its no more expensive, and your getting more capability in the same size package.

I'm most likely going to just get a .45, I'm debating between an XD or a 1911, but I was thinking about a revolver and wanted some opinions on the brand.

:werd: if you're going to go with bear hunting rounds, might as well get the best.

I gladly accept my schooling on 45lc loads, I was not aware cci loaded any. Typically hunting revolvers mean few to no choices in jhp's, incredibly heavy guns, etc. As to the too powerful, does anyone load jhp's in sw500?

You can take more weight increase than I can then.

To each his own but I think with a .380 and a 454 you'll be managing to keep yourself out of the sweet spot for a defensive handgun.

I'd love to see a gel test of the hornady load if anyone has a link to it, so far I'm not finding any.

If I get a full size pistol, I'm not pussyfooting around about caliber. It will be a .45.
