You can use virtual dub to split
If you want to archive, use winrar and you can specify how big you want each file to be and span a movie across several files.
Import it into Windows Movie Maker, then create clips, save as 2 files.
Definitely Virtualdub. If you go to VCDhelp.com, you can find a tutorial on how to split .avi files with the program, as well as other helpful tutorials.
