For example, I'm trying to open a file in Illustrator, but it must be corrupt or something because the spinning beachball just sits there spinning and the file never opens. So I have to force quit Illustrator and find a different solution.

In older OSs, you could simply hit command+period, it would cancel whatever action is currently processing and you could move on. It wouldn't quit the application, just that action.

Is there a way to do this in OSX that isn't too involved or does one have to force quit and redirect?

i havent really found anything. Command+. still works sometimes, but only for some applications. If something starts to beachball and is slowing other things down, I just force quit it

kill -9 "pid" still works better than force quit in my opinion, but you have to know what your looking at.

i agree, however if you're an average user, and just want something to stop, force quit is the best solution
