Two just doesn't cut it.
for my xd-fo-tay-fi
general rule of thumb is spend half what you did on the gun for magazines.
For my pistols I always have at least 3 of whatever magazines I carry in the gun. I also don't really have "range" magazines, but I do have some that work ok, but they just sit in the safe and take up room.
I have 6 for my xd
You should have at least 4 loaded magazines.
sounds like a plan
i figure two with defense ammo, 4 for range
I don't think its wise to break them up into defense and for range categories. How are you going to tell that one of the mags you have loaded for defense has a bad spring and isn't feeding or has a wonky follower that won't lock the slide? If you will only use 4 mags at the range, you should only have 4 mags to me.
Mags are cheap enough that I have like 8 for my walther I think. Realistically 4 is probably more than sufficient.
I have six, two that sit in my nightstand loaded with defensive ammo, and the other 4 are for range duty. The two "defensive" mags are used when I'm function testing whatever ammo they'll be loaded with, and are otherwise not used.
I guess I don't see the point of keeping all your mags in constant rotation. Once you've gotten a thorough function test of the mags and ammo they'll be loaded with, I'm pretty comfortable setting those aside. And unless you're regularly shooting your defensive stuff at the range, then you're constantly loading and unloading your defensive rounds, and potentially re-chambering rounds multiple times which is not a particularly good habit.
I pick up 1 or 2 extra for each gun, usually. For handguns, the only exception is my G17, because I've got like 7 of those 31rd mags for it now.
I break them up that way because the california mags make it easier keeping track of ammo spent at the range. Defense mags are all regular capacity, with a few frankenmags I've put together for higher than regular capacity.
Otherwise, I mark them for failure and toss 'em in the range bag, where they stay.
That's kind of how I think. Cycling $6/box range ammo a few times doesn't bother me since it has relatively short shelf life, but the >$20/box defensive ammo is something I don't like to go through or handle too much. Once I'm sure that a specific type of defensive ammo works with my Glock (after firing a magazine or two of it), I load up two magazines and leave them be. If I find some new defensive ammunition that I want to try, then I'll swap the defensive magazines with range mags. Otherwise, it seems that leaving a quality magazine fully-loaded for a long period of time doesn't harm it.
I've always been mildly tempted to pick up some of those nutty extended-capacity magazines, but could never bring myself to. Other than protruding a considerable distance below the handgrip, how well do the function, and what is it like shooting with those?
I've always bought the actual glock mags, and I've never had a problem. Had a buddy with a non-glock version of the mag and it had issues feeding. They function perfectly, hadn't notice any real change during shooting. still feels the same in my hand, though I've had some friends that would grip the pistol in one hand, magazine in the other.
Really only use them at the range, generally when I'm going to relieve some stress and I want to just burn through some rounds.
For handguns I like to have atleast 4-6 mags.
damn- had 3 mags for my glock, just picked up 11 more- well actually getting 13. But when I found them for <$12/piece shipped new I couldn't pass it up.
multiple calibers avail im guessing these are 9mm ones you bought?
I have 6 mags for my AK (but they are ten rounders )
Might want to pick up a few extra incase a new ban comes along soon, especially if Hitlery becomes prez.
I need to buy more AK mags, I've only got 14 of the 30 rounders.
At last count I believe I had 36 30 rounders, 1 55, 8 40's, 6 20's, 1 75 drum, 2 100 drums. I think I need more oh i got like 15 5 and 10 rounders too.
And I got about 30 74 30's and 3 40's.
If SG still has the ak mag deal going order some from them thats where I got about half the 30's I have.
I bought them off glocktalk. Bought all the guy had-11. He called me and 2 that he thought were new weren't so he's shipping that 11- 9 new and 2 used. And is also picking me up 2 new ones to ship along with them. So great transaction. Just been trolling the for sale ads for a couple weeks. Also just picked up my SBR upper.
