I have a 40d and a 11-16, 24-70, and 70-200 2.8 lenses. I'm considering picking up a sigma 30mm 1.4 and debating if I would be better picking up a body with better high iso capabilities. I realize a fast lens would give me a lot more wiggle room but if i'm shooting wide open, would i have enough dof to be useful for some glorified snap shots?
ART How useful is a fast lens for night shooting?

you need both a fast lens (1.4) and a body with good ISO. but if its just for snapshots then what you have is probably fine..
the 2.8 lenses are okay but i'd like to have one 1.4 i think and i think 30mm would be a good focal length for taking shots of some landscapes and random other things hand held at night.
Tell that for every street photographer and photo journalist who has ever shot night time/low light.
I like the 30mm 1.4 only bad thing is that it's just for crop sensors. Thanks for the replies that were useful.

Fast lenses are excellent for night shooting, BUT the Sigma 30mm sucks at focusing in low light, it just hunts.

what are you shooting? landscapes you'll want 30mm or wider on a crop, at least. And even that's kinda tight. 24L 1.4 is nice, but pricey.

Yeah depends what your shooting and you haven't told us.
Landscapes you can use F/8 and 2 minute exposures under moon light to make night look like a clear summer day (you get my point.)

Sorry for not saying earlier. I work in tv news and often work nights with not much around and would just like to get some better pics of random stuff that I see. Flash isn't always a good thing to have when you're in the hood at 2 am.
