Yeah, to an extent. Iirc theres a caveat regarding something about how much the state contributed to the prize pool or similar
Nah, not like that. In California there is no state tax on lottery winnings. We wrote this in as a requirement for the proposition that legalized lotteries in this state.

You do have to pay the federal tax, up to 37% of the winnings.

I worked on a case about 10 years ago, maybe something changed or maybe I'm becoming senile. It's a toss-up :dunno:
