2001 MDX had a catastrophic transmission failure on the freeway where the transmission locked up and almost threw me into a semi next to me. The dealership tried to keep a recall they had about that "limited" and silent to the point where I did not get a notice. I would have to find out a few years later and after a $4000 transmission job to find out. Later on I did a search online and it is a common problem with all Honda/Acuras from years 01' to 03'. When I did find out they said I had too many miles to do anything about it. Honda should be on the spotlight too about this shit. I almost died.

You should've called the local news, they would've made a big story out of it and got you a bunch of money.

You know what is funny is after I got a whole new transmission this one is starting to slip too. This would be so dangerous if I were to go to the mountains and it would dislodge from gear and I go backwards.

I had a 2001 Acura 3.2 CL Type S, and I had to get the transmission replaced twice in that car. Fortunately, it didn't let go when I was on the highway either time. I never had to pay for a replacement though. The first time, the dealership said they were doing a "goodwill" replacement since it was out of warranty, but I'm fairly certain they knew there was a problem with the transmissions at that point (there was already information online about it by then). There wasn't an official recall yet at that point though. There was a recall by the time the second transmission let go. I had to bring the recall to the dealership's attention though, otherwise I think they were going to try and charge me for it. :o

When did you get the new transmission? I had mine replaced in 2002 the first time, and it obviously still had the same problem as the original one.

After my second transmission started to slip they said I would have to pay for the whole service since I had too many miles. You think if I write a letter to Acura they would replace it for free especially at these times? They think I would get it replaced with my own money but I just don't have $4k to drop right now.

When did you get the second transmission put in? If there was a recall issued for the transmission in your vehicle, no way in hell should you have to pay for a replacement.

    I leased a 03 TL Type-S back in 2002.

First Transmission died at 21,000 Miles (covered)
Second Transmission died at 29,000 Miles (covered)
Third Tranmission died at 42,000 Miles (covered under good will)

Went through 3 transmission, when I gave it back on lease the 4th started slipping.

By far the worst experience i've ever had with a new car.

Older CL TL's the warranty on the transmission is 100k miles if you fall within a certain VIN range.

3 years ago? Then the transmission that's in your vehicle now shouldn't have the same problem, that should have been well after they fixed the issue. But you never should have been charged for the original replacement in the first place, since a recall was in effect. I would try to work that angle if I were you. They already got $4,000 out of you that they shouldn't have gotten. Threaten to go to the media/BBB/whatever if they're not willing to budge. :o

There was a recall though. If it's within that range, it should be covered regardless of mileage. My car was well over 100,000 miles (somewhere in the neighborhood of 160k) when I had the transmission replaced the second time. :o

I'm pretty sure if you pay for repairs that then end up coming under a recall later you can recoup the cost, audi does it at least in the letters they send out for them.

Well since I didn't know about the recall my naive young self went to my uncles transmission shop to get it replaced. I know I should have gone to the dealership at that time but I didn't know about a recall.

i know because i brought the rs4 in for something the other day since it had a misfire and we had a letter saying that they are replacing the coil packs if you are having problems and that if you paid for them to be replaced already there was a form to get reimbursed
