do i have to look at what the motherboard cansupport or can i just upgrade to faster ram?
Your doubting for a rightfull reason, the best thing that you can do is to grab your motherboard manual and find out what combinations it supports. Because if you don't get the right Pins for instance lets say you accidently get the wrong memory instead of DDR 2, or Mhz that goes along with what the motherboard supports ,or get a rather trashy manufactor of memory , you can get in a mess that you'd prefer not to be into.
I suggest Corsair a memory combination which worked wonders and flawless for me. Can't say exactly what's the best combo because i don't know your MB specifics.
