Im going to be honest here.

I know its bad, but it bothers me when people spend thousands (and I mean like 4k+) on a camera and then dont have a CLUE on how to operate it.

I dont know if its....
  1. That Im jealous that theyre able to drop that much money on something they obviously dont understand
  2. That Im upset because they think that throwing money out there will give them good picturtes and it has nothing to do with knowledge/ability/skill
  3. That I feel that people who get gear of such a level should know (or at least want to learn) how to use the equipment

Elitist? Maybe.

Just a rant.

Thoughts?

If you have the money and the simple understanding of the possibilities... it won't take long to be addicted and learn. Granted you're not buying it just to say "oh, look what I got". :dunno:

It doesn't always bother me. The people that annoy me, like Girth said, are the people who spend a lot of money just to show off the fact that they can get cameras not everyone else can afford, and don't really have any intent to use the camera to its full potential.

However, I think it's okay to spend a little extra money upfront if you know that you are going to get into the hobby, learn, and grow. Why buy an entry level camera up front if you have done the research and read about it's limitations, and know that you will outgrow it after only a short time?

Also, if you can afford it, there are other benefits to spending extra money besides the more advanced feature sets, such as build quality, feel, screen, etc. If you can afford it, why not?

I definitely respect people that learn on cheaper equipment and focus more heavily on technique instead of technology, but I can't fault someone for getting nice gear if they can afford it.

who gives a shit? its an assembly line built product. its not like all of these people are prohibiting you from buying one. everyone here should know skill trumps equipment. at the end of the day when you compare pictures between your whatever xt with kit lens to some soccer mom's d300 with a gold plated lens handed to her directly from jesus christ himself, the difference between gear and skill will be noticeable.

lol, this is also why i prefer to buy used gear. i can't validate spending the money on this hobby at my skill level. i dont want to be the douche-nozzle running around with a 1d.

It's like the guy who can't drive worth a crap but cruises around in a Ferrari.

Sounds like you have a little case of jealousy.

I flat out admitted its part jealousy.

Im just ranting.

And Im not referring to anyone here. I made this thread after I read one on POTN...

its no different than seeing a guy drive a Bentley or a Range Rover... makes you wonder if he really appreciates the car or is he showing it off. Doesn't mean he doesn't deserve it, just means I want one really bad. Mainly the Range Rover. I'll have one sooner or later... later more than likely. :o

yeah but who really cares how much someone else enjoys his material good/or whether he's "worthy". its just all mass produced comsumer goods anyways.

I hear this in the sportbike crowd I ride with, as in some guy doesn't "deserve" a GSXR1000 just b/c he doesn't ride balls out all the time, even just grabbing something from the market. As if.

wrt camera gear, if someone can rattle off all sorts of book knowledge but cant produce one good frame, who cares about all that blah blah anyways.

and likewise if they can't explain recirprocity but make awesome, moving, inspiring pictures...isn't that what it's really about?

I dont think you guys quite understand what Im saying.

Take your GSXR1000 analogy and make it so that the guy doesnt even know how to take it off the stand. On top of that, he doesnt even want to try to teach himself how to take it off the stand. He just wants to tell people he has it.

Thats when it bothers me.

Blargh.

I should have known this would go a little off.

I never said they didnt deserve it. If they made the money, they can do whatever they want.

I hear ya broheem.

I know of two people that I have seen recently with D300/D700, and know personally, that they have NO idea what they are holding in their hands.

Makes me sick because it would be like a light saber in the hands of a child, instead of my Jedi hands.
