I want to get a long-range rifle probably good out to 500yds.

Would .223/5.56 be able to achieve this range accurately?

I sort of want to build another AR, but wouldn't mind a nice bolt gun. What do you guys think?

    338 for 500yds

  4. You sure as hell can shoot 500 yards very accurately with a .223. A bolt gun will cost you less money, allow you more options with your ammo, and be easier to maintain.

Actually, what about 300yds? Should be cake eh? I just remembered that my local ranges only go up to about 300 yds :greddy:

Rem 700 for a bolt gun? What kind of optics should I be looking at? I'm hoping to get the glass under $500.

  7. 300 yards is simple for .223. You can accurately shoot that distance with the lighter projectiles.

  8. I'd ask phrozenlikwid about glass. The only downside to a 700 is that the barrel twist rates are kind of slow. If you're just interested in 300 yards, that's not going to be a problem though, as the lighter (shorter, really) bullets are every bit as accurate as the heavier (longer) bullets at that distance. If you wanted to reach out much past that, then there's an advantage to something with a faster twist.

This. Just make sure you get a barrel with a sufficient twist rate for the 75 & 77gr projectiles. Savage has a factory 1:7, not sure about who else.

Just get a nice bolt gun. I just built up my Remmy 700, but I'm having issues getting it dialed in. :hs:

  11. What's the issue?

    Fuck this disease amirite? :bowrofl:

  17. That's my first instinct, and if he really only intends to shoot it at 300 yards, the slow twists of the 700 barrels won't be an issue. Like sprite and I said though, they will be an issue at longer ranges. Now, the 1:9 that Remy uses in some of their barrels will reliably shoot 69 grain stuff, and maybe even heavier, but it's really not ideal if you want to really reach out and touch something due to increased wind deflection vs the 75 and 77 stuff. In that case, 1:8 is likely where you want to be. Sprite said that Savage has a rifle in 1:7, which is a little faster than ideal, but the only costs there are a little less velocity and a little more barrel wear. Not really a big deal. The ideal solution would be a 700 and have it rebarreled, but that's expensive, and that may not be what the OP has in mind. Taking all this into account, the 700 is perfectly fine for 300 yard shooting, if he intends to shoot further than that then there may be a better option out there.

Besides being way out of his range...

  19. I mean, for target shooting at long range it doesn't offer any advantage over a decent bolt gun. It's more expensive, more work to maintain, likely less accurate (while ARs certainly have made advances in accuracy, I'd still put my money on even a decent bolt gun.) It also severely limits the ammo you can shoot unless you want to single load rounds (which them eliminates the single benefit of a semi-auto over a bolt gun in this case.)

I'm trying to decide between 223 and 308 for my first bolt gun :hs:

I really want to get into 308.

  22. What do you want to use it for?

Hitting paper at 200-300 yards, max of 600 yards. I know 223 would be cheaper...

  24. If it's the AI variant it'll also have superior external ballistics.
