According Lilja, 1-12 is right for 55-60, 1-14 is more suited for anything smaller.
IMI Galil in 5.56 usually go for $1800ish + depending on model particulars, theres a couple companies selling them with US made recievers for $1400ish for the 5.56 models, not seen any US made 308's.
most guns nowadays run either a 1-9, 1-8, or a 1-7 twist
the 1-12 was the original twist in the m16a1
the 7,8,9's are usually for your extremely heavy bullets, at least in a .223
I don't follow AR's and what not, but 1-12 just made sense to me because most milsurp you see is 55-60grn.
