...do they still send somebody to your family's house to break the news?
Casualty Assistance Calls Officer. Not sure what the other services call them.

i got called on sunday to accompany a CAO, but my uniform was already boxed up since im PCSing. No way I wanna go see that shit
I knew someone who used to do that shit (knock on people's doors and tell them they just lost a son/daughter).. He said he invested on a caller id and never answered the call to get this shitty detail. He hated it as you can imagine.

The Chaplain, (Navy side), no longer gets this duty.
The Chaplain is a very integral part of this process and putting him in the line of fire on an initial visit sometimes makes the NOK resent the Chaplain.
Sounds like a bitch move to me as well as BS.
Or maybe it's different in other services but the CACO position is assigned. We just don't call any officer to notify the NOK of a death. There's training involved.
I had to do a CACO call with my CO and 1st Sgt back in July. It was really shitty.
