When will I get to move out of the barracks and buy a nice ps3?
you won't for a while (someone will post the specifics about rank and/or time in service required to move off base) but for the love of god don't get married just for this reason. too many young enlisted kids do it just to get an extra few hundred bucks a month and the ability to live off base. it usually ends up in a messy divorce, many times with a child involved. please don't become a statistic!
No way I would get married for that.
The main factor in determining whether or not you will get BAH (what they pay you for a place out in town) is the capacity of the barracks. I'm not sure of the exact number, but I believe it is around 95%. If the barracks is that full, the command will authorize BAH to Marines starting with Sgts and then Cpls in order to lower the capacity percentage. Normally, by the time they work their way through the NCOs, the barracks is well below the percentage so they don't have to authorize BAH to LCpls and below.
Dude. Just get married. Free $$$$ and I guarantee you'll be authorized to live outside the dorms!
just kidding. don't do it! RUN! RUN!!
Join the AF, and only deal with barracks in basic
no matter how long you are in barracks it will seem like forever.
yes, yes you would. the first thing with breasts to come along and suck you off will have you running to the court house for a marriage liscense.
You waste so much time trying to keep myths alive. The barracks on Tinker AFB are laughably small. There is barely enough room for the single bed, a dresser, and a desk. Sure the outside looks nice, but they are are 10 feet by 12 feet prison cells. Throw in the fact that the rooms must be kept to white glove standards, and the Tinker AFB "dorms" are worse than any Army barracks I have lived in.
What I mean is that the barracks he will have in the Marine Corps will probably not be up to the standard of the Department of Defense guidelines.
Understood that the word barracks can be used to describe any military housing, but what I identify the word barracks to mean is what we had in basic training: a room full of beds and wall lockers. I consider anything that is your own space such as the 10' x 12' cell at Tinker to be called dorms.
I actually know very little about this since I only lived in the tech school dorms for 31 days before moving off base. Still, you should accept that I am right and you are wrong.
They just built new dorms here with a kitchen.
Single Soldier housing is called Barracks in Army and Marines, in AF it is called Dorms.
So when he joins the marines he will stay in Barracks until the time that he is allowed off-post housing.
I'm still right.
kinda but Barracks does not mean starship bays. Barracks can be individual rooms. Barracks is just an identifier for single soldier housing.
so...when will I get my own room?
I only lived in the dorms for three weeks in tech school so I am in quite the same boat. Still he is right anyone who argues is wrong. Ger married then join the air force. You'll have the pleasure of earning as much as your TI while you are in basic. That'll get him going. Then enjoy living off base and boozing it up while in tech school and moving straight into a house of your own (take note I did not say dorm or barracks) right out of tech school. AF FTW.
I think he knows I am pulling his chain, if not then lets fight!
this could get hot! let me get the oil and ice.
Not for a LONG time. ive been in almost 3 1/2 years and i still live with a roomate, as an e-4. getting married on the 21st though...3-4 month base housing waiting list ftl!
I got to move out of the barracks when i was an e-4 in hawaii. Hawaii BAH FTW and it was lower then but now it is about 1100 per month single soldier rate.
