yes, it is called staying tight.
i dont think i actively think about flexing my abs, but i would assume it just happens when i lift anyway
so just on pushing, pulling and pressing exercises?
i was doing tricep pushdowns and i noticed my stomach wasnt flexed at all.. then i flexed and realized it was more tiring...
doubt it will get rid of my pot belly
the point isnt to get rid of a pot belly, its to keep yourself safe.
its important to keep the pressure doing certain lifts, helps you lift more weight
I flex my abs when I'm leaving a big dump
if you are doing some db presses try a few reps totally relaxed then a few reps tight (abs flexed). I notice a lot more power when tight.

Try doing overhead squats without flexing your abs.
