squatting on the smith?
barbell squat > smith squats. just saying because i never tried them before, now i will on leg day
Smith squats are fucking useless unless you like getting less out of the movement and hurting yourself.
Why are they causing damage (hurting yourself) vs. a free weight squat? The arch in the back?
i use the smith...and free weight...depends on the mood
Smith is more like a hack squat.
Greater shearing force on your joints, knees especially.
I use both. Smiths are great when I don't have a spotter and I'm going heavy anyway. I don't have to walk back 3 feet with a butt load of weight on my shoulders
I tried squatting with a smith machine about 2 months ago. I didn't like it at all. Akward position (couldn't sit back into it) and doesn't feel right as it forces you to follow the line of the machine.
I squatted with the smith machine last night and grew a vagina
if you are tempted to do smith squats instead of barbell squats, you are probably trying to use too much weight on the barbell squats
go as light as you need to in order to have the proper form
You're not hitting the stabalizer muscles nearly as well when using the smith.
you dont have a cage?
I'm sure the smith machine has a good purpose, I just haven't found it yet. If I am in a commercial gym and want some type of less taxing work, i use the hammer strength equipment.
smith machine is crap compared to free weights
Does your rack not have safety catches or whatever?
when I first started squatting, I used the smith machine exclusively and could rep like 225 8-10 times. One day, I decided to free squat and could barely do 135 4 times. My whole body was shaking the whole way up and down
I pulled a muscle in my back pretty bad one day using the Smith Machine so I try to stick to free weight squats now.
Yesterday I was about to rack the weights then some moron came and grabbed a plate from my rack. I almost dumped the weight and he would've taken a barbell to the face.
I've never seen anyone get hurt on a smith, just free weight actually.
I think I do less weight on the smith
Not at my gym. All we have are a couple of squat racks that are slanted from the top down, then have bars on the sides. If you are too short, you aren't getting a full ROM squat out of that thing. It sucks nuts
Again, when I have 4 plates or more on each side and trying to back away from the safety catches, with no spotter, it gets a little hairy. It's easier to use the smith machine and I don't really give a flying fuck what it's doing/not doing to my stabilizer muscles. I'm not competing in the fucking olympics anytime soon. I just want to work out.
My knees don't like the smith, though I hurt my right knee doing free weights
free weights hit those stabilizers very hard...smith machine just can't compare
my hips hate the smith, it's too restricting
