It just seems so faulty to me to gauge the success of a grappler based on points. It makes people tentative to try for things and stalls the action. I'm always super conservative when grappling for points but when i'm just sparring i'm constantly going for stuff and it's alot more fun.

what other way is there to judge performance in a tournament besides submitting or outscoring your opponent? it makes the most sense in a tournament to use points as a judgment of performance, the more you score, the more you are dominating your opponent usually.

same here. I'd love to be able to do a sub only--then ref decision if goes the distance--tournament, but refs tend to not pay enough attention.

imo point system isn't a good measure of performance. As the judges who give out the points they could be biased in what or whatnot they believe deserves more or less points compared to the other judges.

i think it should be a sub or a draw. There shouldn't be timelimits. This would create the obvious problems where a match would last an hour though :sad2:

grappling is pretty subjective.. so without a point system if matches went the distance they would be very hard to judge

If you are competing in a points environment adjust your game to suit.

He is somewhat right. I have seen refs give people point the moment they move say out of half guard, into side mount, but get swept or pulled back into guard the moment they get into side. Then I have seen them take their time giving other people point or just not give some people points

He's talking about grappling and they are set points like sweep worth 2 points ect. They are kinda set in stone and if a judge gave someone different points, then they were not paying attention to the ref or fighters.

I watched a san shou or however it's spelt match a few weeks back and a guy kept going for takedowns which are worth 2 points I believe. By the 4th one the guy was so exausted he had a hard time getting back up himself. By the 7th one he couldn't even stand up and crawled back to his corner and the ref waved him out. Probably one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.
