Once you start lifting? I mean, they don't make your muscles bigger, they just tone them for a bit.

Good for scapula health.
good for maintenance if you're on vacation. and they're not bad if you want to get a little pumped up before a date or something

Push-ups are more maintenance than anything. They won't help you grow anything.
Also how do people get their muscles to stay tense for such long times.

Yes they are great for shoulder health. Great accessory exercise if you have bands or chains too. I do them 2-3 times a week in different variations on a regular basis
Push ups and push up variations are a great tool.
the scapula is a bone but what you are trying to say is scapula stability....so yes...they is good...

anybody got a good plan for getting good at em? Ive been trying to work em in since I'm trying to get into the military, but it's tough to do heavy chest and improve your push ups.
like today i did three sets of 1 minute of pushups with a 2 minute break. got 30, then 20, then 15
It builds muscle in people that don't/haven't lifted weights. My gf could only do three pushups when we started doing them and now she can do 30 or so...
You must have gone to a nice school. If I did that at any school that I went to I'd have condoms, needles, stillborn children and all sorts of nasty on my shirt.

Everytime I have my chest/triceps day, I always do 3 sets each of incline/decline pushups.
i do a set every day in the morning to wake myself up and get the blood moving around.
