try stiff legged deads also, they definitely worked my lower back and i think it is an amazing hamstring stretch and work out.
If you're looking to add mass to your lower back why don't you just do hyperextensions?

No. Deadlifts did not add that much mass to my lower back and I tend to use my lower back more than my legs. If I wanted to add mass (which I don't) to my lower back, I'd do weighted hypers for higher reps.
What does that matter? If you do weighted hypers properly you can really hit the lower back and add mass.
Edit: I reread my post and the way I worded it makes it seem as though he should do hypers instead of deadlifts. That's not what I meant...he should do them in addition to deadlifts.

for sure. i ussually save those for leg days though.
dont have one. 305 is a pr for me though.
