A program I'm installing needs to put a file into $KDEDIRS. Where do I find out what this variable points to? I'm using knoppix/debian

well, that just gives you the list of environment variables. echo will also if you specify the variable name

For someone claiming to be an experienced "hacker", I would think you would know this.

Well, I'm trying to get knzb to work and it says that I need to put knzbui.rc into where $KDEDIRS is before compiling. Maybe I'll try a different newsreader

okay so go to a shell and type

    kde-config --path config

then go to the last path specified and drop the .rc file in there. for kde 3.1 on bsd it is /usr/local/share/config

edit: actually, come to think of it that might not work because it's your newsreader looking for the variable. you could either declare and export the variable in your .profile or you can see if there is a compile-time option in the newsreader to specify the location. read the INSTALL and README files that came with the newsreader source.
