I think it’s like 9 and a bit.
The larger one is what, then? 11'?

IMO, that's too much. Mine is 9'8" with a 36" center mounted farm sink and 45" between the island and the counter and it's perfect.

You have symmetry on the back wall and you'll want to mirror that in the island and yes, peninsulas scream "builder grade, IMO". IIRC, you have the counter space around the corner for things like a coffee maker. The only thing I will 100% caution against is putting the dishwasher on the refrigerator side of your space. You want your slide-out trash to be right below your prep space and the fridge closer to that. You will trip the fuck over the dishwasher while prepping dinner if it lives between the fridge and the sink.

Something like this just as an example.. So you have the extra counter space when you need it.. And when you don't, its tucked away so you get the benefit of the peninsula.

Mrs Sam likes the big island too. We hate to lose the counterspace, bceause aside from about 18-20" on either side of the cooktop against the bank of cabinets, we have no other space. We need that prep space for cooking, baking etc, and I hate to limit ourselves.
OK, missed this. That's not nearly enough for what I know you're spending on this renovation. I mean, you haven't got the 3rd space that we have for prep/counter storage, so it will drive you nuts if you don't take advantage of the space.

Kitchens need to work on 2 planes; the every day work of two (or more) people needed to cook and/or do dishes in the same space. But, if you don't have anywhere to store your coffee maker or mixer out of the way, you lose that very important 40".

At least you guys have almost 4' of space from peninsula to back wall.

You have symmetry with the peninsula. It’s literally the same length, parallel to the wall of cabinets.

Coffee station is around the corner. You’re on it.

And yeah. Dishwasher going on the island. Haven’t hammered out exactly where yet. Slide out trash right below either of the prep spaces on left or right of sink

If you don’t like the look of the peninsula I can totally respect that. But just say that. Nobody has made a compelling argument for the improvemnt of functionality with the island that makes up for dropping 30 inches off the end.

This sounds way more confrontational than i mean it lol I’m sorry

We are so paranoid of running out of work space. I’ll kill my wife and then myself if we drop 350 on this house and are short on prep space in this gee dee kitchen.

YOU CAN HAVE BOTH.... You just need to be creative about it.

Remove the wall. Go with the bigger island.
Use additional space to create more storage and pantry.

Kitchen and dining room become the same room.

You get everything you want. The big island. More storage. And all your giving up is a wall.

Have you considered putting the portion of the island that extends past the smaller island on a hydraulic system so that when you press a button it raises up from your floor? That would solve your problem of wanting flow and the counterspace when you need it and would be badass as fuck tbh.

Supporting wall. Don’t feel like putting a huge beam up on the wall perpendicular to the cabinets all the way across to the other side tbh. Plus it houses these cool original sliding glass doors we want to keep

Dude.. Your house. BUT, lose the sliding glass indoor doors. Put a beam up. Take down the wall. You can have the huge peninsula you want and lots more open space and storage.
What the hell do you need sliding glass indoor doors for?
If you want a design feature, blow out one of the exterior walls and put a nano door in.

But opening an inside door to the inside of the house isn't 1/10 as cool as wide open, unobstructed space.

That’s a good idea. He might also consider just extending an entire side of the house by 40” then he could have the big size and 360 access 😎

Bline I appreciate this passion but we are not on the same page here at all.
