I'm going to the Galapagos in a few weeks and was wondering what lens you recommend me taking. I'll be on a boat most of the time (when we're not on the islands), so I was thinking of renting a telephoto lens. I currently have a 35mm 1.8 and was thinking of renting a Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G.

Comments? Something I should rent instead?

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest a zoom to go with that 35mm.. problem is, you might find that 200mm isn't enough distance.

personally i'd rent a lens if i wasn't going to use it after i got back.

are you diving?

i wouldnt even take the 35 1.8. yeah it's small as fuck, but you need like a 17-50/17-55 and some insane fucking zoom. 70-200 isn't enough

any decent 400mm options?

how about 80-400 or 200-400?

never used these, but seriously 200 isn't enough

Take the 35 as a general usage lens. It's tiny and fast and I'm sure you'll want shots of the boats, people on the boat etc at some point.

And 200mm won't be anywhere near long enough if you want closeups of animals from a boat off the shore of an island. Not even close. Maybe a 400 and teleconvertor?

Nikon AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED

Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3

28-300mm would be good...it's a fantastic travel lens with really good reach. The 80-400mm is big and the AF is SLOWWW.
