Whats your opinion on this?
From what I've read, it seems like it might be a winner.
except that all current programs will now need to be run through an emulator because they are looking for a normal filesystem, not a database (microsoft did say that an emulator would be included, however). personally, i do not want to have to get all new programs just because microsoft decides to change how the filesystems work
link to article?
I think I might be making the chance sooner then later
Wow the file system seems ever more screwy than I remember. Longhorn is definetly something I will not be siwtching over to. Win2K Pro IMHOP is the best of the M$ Operating Systems ever, and as far as I'm concerned thats how it will stay. What the hell is wrong with them suddenly deciding to change the FS like this? This, IMHOP, seems like a very bad move on the part of M$..
hsmith, if my plans go right; you won't have to worry about Trusted Computing for much longer.
Bill Gates is God
Man, I can't believe that anyone, even MS, could come up with an idea THAT bad
What the fuuuuuuck
Suddenly my desire to get good at linux is increasing very rapidly
Now let's hope that MS doesn't read this thread, so they go through with this terrible idea and everyone either buys Macs or switches to Linux
I agree.. wtf is M$ thinking?
i read in a pc world article (or somethink like that, the article is reliable) that MS is doing this because their windows product line is starting to falter. not only are they making a new filesystem, you will only be able to use the .NET framework/programming languages on it. that is why they are pushing visual studio .NET so much, even though it sucks. just a giant marketing ploy to keep their user base
more $$$$ in their pocket, that's what they're thinking... and also more control of the market which they've always been after.
Its funny how Sun always pushed the "smart server/dumb client" model while Microsoft always pushed the powerful desktop. Now they pull this shit.
maybe, just maybe... this may be the end of windows. they finally shoot their self in the foot with that nuke! we can only hope.
maybe this will encourange linux as a more friendlier desktop for end users
windows won't die until there is no more microsoft
if this new FS bombs, MS will do *something* to try and take the power back. They won't just let windows die...
Linux has a long way to go desktop wise. X11 is a joke, an archiac system based on design concepts of the late 80's early 90s. Its slow and takes a lot of ram, especially when running high resolution desktops. Don't take this the wrong way, I love BSD and linux, but they're not that great as far as desktops go...unless of course all you do is use basic internet resources.
Either way though, I will not be using windows longhorn. I sincerely hope that we see some real improvements in GNUland by the time longhorn is released.
Another thing about this, I think they are comming out with a new OS farrr too early. I mean hell XP just came out not long ago, and Longhorn is going to be released in the relatively distant future. Hopefully this will definetly be the end of them, I used to be all for Microsoft and shit, but the way they are now is just far too insane, they are trying to control the market a little too much, and they're getting a little clumsier on their "accidental" exploits. I really hope this will be the end of them.
R-Type: Where in Ct are you from??
Well, if this is true (and I find it somewhat hard to believe) then I doubt that I'll ever upgrade from XP, and I'll more than likely switch to a Linux solution.
By the way, regarding the ".Net sucks" comment, I'd like to see your proof.
So it means peoples' files will be on their server? I am confused...
It's definetly real, I read the same thing off of Microsofts webpage sometime ago.
I find Linux to be a perfectly fine desktop at the moment, but you're right, for most people it's not there yet and X could use some improving. It's starting to come together as a desktop though, the new SuSE versions are great.
