Which would you choose mostly for fun but also in a SHTF scenario?
Depends on the budget, if its enough for Fulton or LRB M14 then that, otherwise DSA FAL.
i have an IMBEL FAL kit right now, and am looking forward to getting it built but its hard to ignore the AR-10 just cause of how modular it is.
it depends on what it will be used for an how accurate you want it to be.
p.s. i want an AR10
Modular? You mean how there isn't any spec that all the companies build to, so each AR-10 lower has to have that companies upper and often mags as well? Yah, sounds great to me
Fal and ar10. Yes you need them both.
I say M14/M1A
AR-10 would dominate if manufacturers could produce them in the same spec.
so buy one brand and accessories from them. once you have rails and a stock everything else IS modular.
its not like they make a different spec rail size for AR10s
of course there will be problems if you try to mix and match with AR10s, but since they arent all built to the same spec why would you even attempt that?
buy all Noveske, Armalite, DMPS or whatever and you'll be fine.
what i was getting at is that once you have your rifle (all 1 brand, panzer ), you still have the modularity of 5.56 AR rifles.
thats like saying "my ak-47 bolt wont fit in my ak-74"
i guess the whole platform sucks!
I voted for M1A but I would love to have an FAL or L1A1. I just can't afford to feed them .308
Oh, 308 would definately be pricey. I think I'd keep it more for occasional fun and SHTF.
AR-10 is the most useful. FAL is the cheapest. M1A is the nicest.
I think you'd be most likely to be able to source M1A mags and parts. FAL wouldn't be far behind for mags, less so with parts. There are a couple variables to the AR10 platform that could make parts useless. (AR vs. SR pattern, etc)
I really don't think that you need a .308 for SHTF. I'd go with a much smaller, lighter cartridge that would still get the job done.
.308 gets heavy quick
Oh, I'm sure. I think it'd make an excellent "heavy" weapon, though, for the times when the .223 isn't cutting it.
.223 is effective out to 300+ yards, and is common, light, and cheaper than .308. When would you really need a semi-auto .308?
I had this same question about 3 weeks ago.
I really wanted the M1A, but it was way too expensive. I can't have the FAL by name due to AWB. AR-10 is just as expensive as as the M1A.
I went with the Saiga 308. I can get 25 rnd mags for it, it's got a 16" barrel, and is built on the AK platform. It's also less than half the price of all the others.
If you're looking at something that is good for SHTF, it may be what you need. It's not going to drive tacks at 100yds, but that's what I have a precision bolt rifle for.
When would you need a semi-auto anything?
Same reason the guys in IZ have been getting M-14s for about 18 months now - 5.56 doesn't go through mud/concrete walls very well. Cover is cover a lot longer with 5.56 than 7.62.
That shit's gay. I'm so glad I live in a free state right now. Hope the AF doesn't move me somewhere... not free. We'll see in the next few months.
You make fine points, sir. Although I'll readily admit to the advantages of the AK platform, I got much love for the US/NATO weapons.
My pick would be a AR-10 hands down. The AR-10 will have drop free mags. I really dislike mags you have to rock and lock. It's just so un-american. The heavy metal guys all seem to like the DPMS AR-10 lowers for some reason iirc they have the better magazines or you have mor options to build them in other calibers such as 243, 300 win mag, or 6xc (how sick would a 6xc AR be.)
I'm not really feeling the M1A because of the scope mounting situation. A lot more hassle.
The DSA Fal is sexy but it's really don't see one thing that places itself over the AR platform.
The larger calibers have their place when you have to shoot through walls or other light and medium cover. If you had to fight people with body armor 308 and larger would not be a bad thing to have. I keep a AK w/ steel core ammo for this type of stuff.
fal, least expensive.
Saiga= least expensive
oh, and the .308 argument was that it turns cover into concealment
fulton FAL,or SASS,or the OSR
