I never thought about this, but can the magnetic anti-theft strip from a book screw up your hard drive? I left a book that I just purchased on top of my firewire enclosure and am now getting CRC errors. :wtc:

You would think those would come with a fairly good interference protection being external it's bound to encounter some. btw, how fast are those firewire transfers ? I'm trying to gauge on the transfer rates since I'm interested in getting some portable storage.

It's pretty damned quick. I don't have the exact numbers, but I remember benchmarking with sisoft sandra and got higher transfer rates with the firewire drive than with the internal drive on my laptop.

Aren't "firewire" drives really IDE drives with an IDE to Firewire interface? It would be faster than your laptop's drive because laptop drives are typically 4500 rpm and worse seek times. Firewire is fast enough that it won't slow down a 7200 rpm IDE hard drive.
