Woodfield stores reopen after gun scare

Sherry Monroe was trying on a swimsuit in the dressing room of a Woodfield Mall store today when the security gate came down and an employee relayed some scary news: Police were looking for a man with a gun.

Monroe, 33, of Hickory Hills, decided to stay right where she was.

"We didn't want to walk out and see a guy [fitting the suspect's description]," she said.

That was one scene from a tense but ultimately incident-free afternoon at one of the nation's biggest malls. At about 11:20 a.m., a shopper in the parking lot called police to report two suspicious men heading inside. One of them, the caller said, appeared to have a pistol tucked under his jacket.

Schaumburg police closed Woodfield to incoming shoppers and reopened the mall shortly before 4 p.m.

Sgt. John Nebl said Schaumburg police get such reports occasionally, but officers usually locate the suspect quickly and find that he or she is an off-duty cop or doesn't really have a gun. This time, though, the supposed gunman -- whose description police declined to release -- was nowhere to be found.

So about an hour after getting the initial call, police closed Woodfield to incoming shoppers. They then began a store by store search, asking patrons to leave as they swept each of the mall's 300 shops.

Nebl said that methodical approach -- and not a mass evacuation -- was what the situation required.

"We would make an announcement [to leave] if we had an active shooter, if people were in harm's way," he said. "We were just looking for suspicious subjects who might have had a gun. If we had made a blanket statement to evacuate the mall, it could have led to a stampede."

He added that with as many as 50 officers from Schaumburg and other departments on the scene, "we were confident we had things well in hand."

Most employees stayed behind the locked gates of their stores as their patrons -- including Monroe -- gradually trickled out.

At 3:45 p.m., after police announced they hadn't found the suspects inside, Woodfield reopened.

Thirty minutes later, some shops still had their gates down and lights out but most were open for business. Techno music thumped from clothing stores and the scent of Cinnabon floated through the air as if nothing had happened.

George Alcheikh, owner of the Gold Creations jewelry store, said he spent his idle hours catching up on paperwork and fielding calls from friends who had seen news of the shutdown on television. He had no problem with the decision to close the mall.

"There should be no chance of anyone getting hurt," he said. "That was the prudent thing to do."

I love how the link states the search for a "GUNMEN", which to me would imply shots were actually fired.

It doesn't help matters that the pictured cop looks like a fat kid with mild Down's... "Save me, you fat, dumb slob! Halp!" He'd waddle to your rescue, if he didn't pass out trying to get up the stairs.

Stupid friggin' sheep. Screw Chicago. THIS is why open carry should be legal everywhere. Not that I want to, but people would get used to seeing guns on "civilian" belts-where they should be.

the first thing I was going to say is that cop looks mildly retarded- he probably shouldn't have a gun...

also, the cops were probably wetting themselves over the fact that they got to do a lockdown/sweep/play soldier/waste tax dollars...

Until someone fights with police, pulls a gun and shoots at the officer and then gets shot. In that case, they were a saint. :o

Out of the 90 officers at my station, at least 15 are currently in the reserves or national guard, and 5 are currently deployed.

Police need to higher more like that down here. Its really bad when the officer giving you your ticket is winded from walking from his car to my car.

Im cool with alot of them though, I think there was only one guy I knew that was in the military

Most of our officers are pretty cool. The only ones that are consistantly dicks are the traffic cops, but thats just how they are, and even other cops try to avoid them like the plague.

They brought in 50 cops and evacuated a mall, because somebody thought they might have seen somebody with maybe a gun in his jacket?
