A 24-year-old Riverside man getting ready to shoot targets at a shooting range Friday was fatally wounded when he apparently shot himself in the head, authorities said. The man, whose name was being withheld pending notification of his family, was at the Magnum Indoor Public Shooting Range at 12391 Sampson Ave. around 10:15 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to Riverside police Lt. Paul Villanueva. The victim had been on the range six minutes before the shooting and there was no evidence of anything suspicious, Villanueva said. "The Magnum range has surveillance cameras positioned inside the firing line," Villanueva said. "A surveillance video tape of the incident showed the deceased loading a handgun and inadvertently shooting himself." According to Villanueva, the man died of a single gunshot to the head. There was at least one clerk and one other customer in the facility at the time of the incident, authorities said. "The initial police investigation has determined that this man's death was caused by accident," Villanueva said. "However, detectives are continuing their interviews and investigation."
