Anyone take Melanonin to help sleep? Does it affect your mood at all? Does it make you drowsy?
I take it. Makes you drowsy. Also can give me diahrea. Its a precursor to seratonin, which also acts on the bowel. Don't take it every night.
I tried it, never noticed anything.
No, DON'T try 5-HTP. That was pulled from the market years ago because it is not safe for casual use.
Melatonin works for me, but I usually feel groggy in the morning and often stay in bed much later than I should..
no it wasnt...its in most fat burners now too..

Melatonin is absolutely amazing, well maybe not that amazing but it's still very cool. If you take about a 1mg then you shouldn't have any problem waking up. It does make you a bit drowsy. The most amazing aspect are the dreams, I promise you, you will have the most stunning and real dreams of your life. If you don't expierence them the first night, keep taking the supplement for a few more days, on the 3rd or 4th night if you don't notice anything a bit out of the ordinary in your dreaming then I don't know what to tell you. I've had a few people try out melatonin, and they all agreed they had the absolutely the most amazing dreams ever. I have pills that are 3mg a piece, and usually take one if I'm going to bed on time (around 10-11pm). If you're going to take 1 pill thats 3mg, then you better be getting a good nights worth of sleep (7-8 hours).
My concern is why it actually works.
If it works for me, does that mean my brain doesn't produce it's own melatonin? I took 3mg last night and I remember it was like my brain just started to shut down. Sure it was cool, but it seems wrong for some reason.
I don't think it's that, your brain probably just produces it later on in the night.
I took it a few times and it seemed to work great. Untill the 3rd and 4th day when I began to have massive, day-long, headaches. I still take it sometimes but try not to use it more then two days in a row.
Melatonin is a precurser to Seratonin. Alot of Seratonin makes you drowsy.
no, melatonin is a metabolite of serotonin...5htp is the seratonin precursor
Actually I believe that they are both precursers, but 5-HTP is the direct precurser.
Nope seratonin converts to Melanion and 5-HTP wasnt pulled off the market I bought mine at CVS. About 6yrs ago though there was a bad batch running around that was causing heart attacks so it was under investigation. But it turned out to be one bad company. Not the actual product
it actually caused an autoimmune disease called eosinophilia-myalgia

Melatonin, taken orally, never did anything for me. Turkey, taken orally, works wonders.
5-htp is still on the market out where I am from. I took it myself up until a couple years ago or so. 5hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to seratonin, from what I know of it. I seem to recall tryptophan being taken off the market.... it was something I remember it being sold to use in conjunction with HGH 3x that was sold in Hi-Health stores (and a lot of other stuff, I am sure, but that's the one specific product I remember from the late 80s-early 90s) The human grown hormone(HGH3x for weight loss product) stuff was supposed to work best at night when you sleep so that's why they paired it with tryptophan. Yadda yadda yadda....
Anyway. I take Melatonin. I get it from Walmart (the evil empire) and it works for me. A homepathic formulation that also works well with no side affects for me, is Hyland's Calms Forte.(also available at the evil empire, and other stores like Walgreens and the Vitamin Shoppe)
