We're in that above $500k category and all that does is get you into evicting shit head tenants LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL but for real we're selling that place and moving into fully passive income investments.
When I wanted to get rid of shitty guests on Turo, I just raised my price.

Your money should be making you money so that you are not working and therefore can enjoy life.

aka putting money into passive income investments immedately and getting the hell out of the "retirement" account strategy where you have to wait until 59.5 years old to enjoy life
I just try to enjoy life now while I'm still young(ish) and able

my work is meaningful and helps me enjoy my life more because I think it's doing something important. I'm not a workaholic, and I love getting out of work early when I can, but I do like work. I just try to do fun stuff and enjoy life along the way. wife and I went to Germany in November, ski trip in CO in January, got a spring break trip planned with another family that we are close with. but I also had a good day at work today.

Money is kinda useless if you don't have time to enjoy it
my brother in law is a very successful orthopedic surgeon. easily cleared close to 1MM a year at one point. He was absolutely miserable working 6-7 days a week. Took a roughly 50% paycut to work a normal 5 day work-week (which means he "only" makes 500k/year lol), and he's immensely happier. Like a whole different person.

I’d be a lot happier at $500k/yr compared to say $100k-$200k/yr. That extra amount of security my gives as a tool is nice.

The goal would be to not let one’s self fall into the trap of lifestyle creep
I don't think that way tbh. As long as I have enough money to do the things I enjoy and steadily accumulate money aside as a safety net, I'm happy. I spend money and enjoy life today. I travel as much as possible. I toss money around on toys & hobbies because they bring me joy. I'm not one of those folks that delays gratification until retirement, like a lot of oldschool conventional wisdom tries to teach us. Fuck that. if I dropped dead today, I would have still lived a life more interesting than 99% of Americans.

would you still enjoy your job and derive the same meaning from it if you were making 1/10th what you're making now?

and I'm already expecting to work until the day I die. I don't mind working bc I found a way to get paid to do something I actually enjoy.

no, because I spent 15 years in school/training and spent a quarter million in student loans. getting 1/10th of my salary would just be insulting. I enjoyed what I did when I was making a good deal less, 1/10th wouldn't even cover my mortgage, so.....

So helping and healing others isn’t the primary motivation for you as a doctor?

No. Making a living and providing for my family is my primary motivation. I don't need to get filthy rich doing it, but this career is way too time-consuming, difficult and stressful to do for $50k/year. You would never find anyone to do it.

yes, we all want to be rewarded commensurate with the effort required to earn said compensation. i was just making the point that enjoying what you do isn't the same as enjoying what you do as long as you make a certain amount

using 1/10th was merely arbitrary in order to drive the point home

anything else I enjoy doing costs money. this earns me money. I'll take that.

not exactly what you said earlier but ok :hsughno:
earlier, I said "my work is meaningful and helps me enjoy my life more because I think it's doing something important."

which is true. but that doesn't mean I think I should do it for a huge pay cut.

income related threads always trip me out here.
"i would die if I didn't have at least 5MM in my retirement account by 30"
"I'm pissed I only got a 30k bonus & 20% raise this year"
"if you're making less than 500k/yr in SF/NYC you're barely scraping by"

typical oter: "i can't possibly see how you can live a comfortable life without being a top .5% wage earner"
To be fair, nearly 20% of the households in my county are top 0.5% earners, so it definitely names a difference. Makes everything (motherfucking housing!) more expensive.

Meh.. you make more money and end up spending more typically. It's why people who win the lotto end up bankrupt.
